April 29th Kicking Horse River Update The Kicking Horse River is three weeks away from opening weekend. May 16th/17th weekend is the weekend that most outfitters will be opening their doors for the busy summer that brings many thousand people travelling down the Kicking Horse River corridor in whitewater rafts!
The Kicking Horse River Valley corridor and Golden BC are currently experiencing seasonal temperatures and what we would describe as a ‘typical’ spring. The snow along the banks of the Kicking Horse River are melting at an alarming rate and we are seeing the beautiful emerald green waters that we have missed so much since last summer. Once the snow melts, it fuels the rapids to grow bigger – all the way up to Class 4+. Once all the snow has melted at higher elevations, the Kicking Horse River will enjoy glacial melt for the remainder of the season. This is the reason why the Kicking Horse River will have amazing rapids all season long.
Booking your rafting trip early is a wise move for a couple reasons. The first is that it avoids disappointment in not being able to secure your first choice of date. Many Kicking Horse River outfitters are full well in advance for certain dates, usually July and August Long Weekends. The second reason is that many outfitters offer an early season discount.
With current snowpack combined with the current weather trends, we are looking for an amazing opening weekend and a great season with sustained, consistent water levels.
